Designing beyond the box
Join this webinar hosted by Re-board for an honest, experience-driven conversation with designer and engineer Maximilian Hansen — covering structural design thinking, what paper-based materials can actually do, and how to navigate the gap between a client's brief and a genuinely great result. What you’ll learn Why geometry is the real barrier in structural design Most structures are boxes - and there's a reason for that. Max breaks down how conventional thinking limits what designers build, and what it takes to move into free-form and parametric design. How to handle clients, budgets and difficult briefs An honest look at navigating the gap between a client's brief and a genuinely great result — including when the right move is simply to walk away. What paper-based materials can actually do From self-supporting structures and rapid prototyping to complex curved forms and overhead installations — the practical capabilities most people haven't fully explored. Meet the participants A frank, experience-driven conversation about structural design, creative process and what it really takes to push paper-based materials past the expected. Maximilian Hansen (Guest) Designer & Engineer, Nordwerk Design Max approaches structural paper design from an engineering perspective — always asking how far the material can be pushed, and how to make it work in the real world. With 15 years of building large-scale, self-supporting paper structures for clients across Europe and North America, he brings both technical depth and hard-won practical insight. Ali Khalili (Host) CEO, Re-board Ali leads the conversation as host and interviewer, guiding the discussion with practical questions and real-world focus. Glamorous Influencer Showcase for Sephora
BRIEF Premium beauty retailer Sephora joined with over 30 award-winning cosmetic brands to hold an exclusive media and influencer-only event. Invite-only attendees were able to preview exciting upcoming products. The challenge was to produce creative designs and manage the installation of over 30 branded booths on a tight deadline. As Sephora needed to display 37 unique international brands that operate on different continents, the process of managing the design briefs naturally took longer than usual. This left a shorter production time. WHY NEXT PRINTING CHOSE RE-BOARD® Lightweight Quick and easy to set up and take down Potential to be reused for the client’s next event Timesaving in all aspects: design, production, transport Romeo from Next Printing says: “We aren’t just competing with cardboard anymore – we’re also taking on traditional MDF. Not many players on the market use paperboard to build a structure. It is often only used for display purposes. That’s why Re-board® is so unique. It offers an eco-friendly, lightweight and easy to build solution.” DELIVERY The design process was intensely collaborative. Event management studio The Make Haus provided Next Printing with a framework of the style guide, reference images and the purpose of the displays. For more than 5 years, Next Printing has had an internal industrial designer working with Reboard ®. Therefore, they could offer an extremely effective and efficient solution. This designer came up with 3D renderings and solutions to bring the ideas to life. This allowed them to build stands to the brands’ unique requirements. Delivered on the day: Event setup and clear up. Product showcase booths for 32 different brands. 5 premium custom-built stands Innovative TV wall built without a TV stand – the Re-board® structure supported the 65” TV fully. 3x3 metre cubes with downlights – designed so that 3 people can fully assemble them within an hour. Zigzag wall – designed so that 2 people can fully assemble it within 15 minutes. Next Printing produced 37 eco-friendly booths and stands, all with varying, customised, creative design. Using Re-board®, they delivered unique and complex builds which exemplified every element of the premium Sephora brand. In addition, they created custom-built rigid storage boxes to protect the assets from damage during transport. This effective solution allowed for the assets to be reused at future events. RESULT: As Re-board® is lightweight, Next Printing were able to construct and clear up the stands in record time, saving time and money. The client was thrilled with the result and the option to reuse assets at future events. 37 different stands and booths Set up by 6 people in under 8 hours Taken down by 4 people in under 4 hours 70% of assets reused for the next event 30% recycled as paper Next Printing was able to pull off this event within a tight turnaround time of less than 3 weeks. Both Sephora and The Make Haus were extremely happy with the outcome. Thanks to our printer partner’s creative use of Re-board®, Sephora was able to host their premium event within the required timeframe and budget. More than 100 guests interacted with the impressive displays at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal, resulting in incredible media coverage. The project successfully challenged the traditional methods of building with MDF and timber, demonstrating what can be achieved with innovative, sustainable materials.
